The Tutor role

 

At ‘Explore’, you will be working as part of a team and we encourage everyone to help in generating a positive, fun and exciting atmosphere where children will love to learn.

A TUTOR'S duties are as follows:

1.
To support children’s learning, helping them to reach their individual potential. This includes:
 
  • Helping children to log-in and settle into their work when they arrive at the Centre for a session.
  • Monitoring the progress of up to 6 children simultaneously, providing genuine encouragement and praise, as well as awarding prizes in accordance with the Centre’s reward system.
  • Intervening with positive assistance and reassurance during a child’s learning session, e.g. discussing a technique for solving a maths problem, reflecting upon a story that you are reading with a child or guiding an individual to recognise a spellings pattern.
  • Reporting to other staff the notable successes or problems of any children working with you.
2. To act as a role model for the children in the Centre, and strive to develop a rapport with them.
3. To support the management of children in the centre in a calm, amicable and fair manner.
4. To be vigilant as to the welfare and safety of all children and adults in the Centre, immediately bringing any concerns to the attention of the Centre’s managerial staff.
5. To develop a working knowledge of the software products used in the Centre, e.g. SuccessMaker, specific computer games, Internet materials, the database.
6. To undertake basic administrative and maintenance duties as requested by the Centre’s Managerial team.
7. To manage the Surf Club when assigned to work in that zone. This includes:
 
  • Encouraging children to socialise with each other and, if possible, to make new friends.
  • Helping each child to engage in an activity which they will enjoy.
  • Ensuring that the tables and floor in the Surf Club area are kept clean and free from rubbish.
  • Monitoring websites visited by children, calmly taking immediate remedial action should disallowed or inappropriate material be accessed.
  • To treat any knowledge of both the customers’ personal details and the internal affairs of ‘Explore’ with total confidentiality.
  • To publicly represent ‘Explore’ in the best possible manner through your personal conduct.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for exceptional people, with experience of working with children, who:
  • Have the ability to bring a child's learning to life.
  • Are passionate about helping children achieve their potential.
  • Can relate to and build a good rapport with children.
  • Have an impressive academic background (minimum of grade 'B' at GCSE English & Maths).
  • Are presentable, reliable and possess good communication skills.
  • Can demonstrate good ICT capabilities
  • Can work well in a team and help to generate a positive, fun and exciting atmosphere.

Training is conducted through regular formalised, group training sessions as well as on an impromptu basis during shifts.

In order for staff to be able to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the duties listed above to the best of their ability, we place an extremely heavy emphasis on teamwork, expecting all of the staff to support one another in the daily running of the Centre.
