Entrance Exam Preparation Course
At St Albans our 11+ course is tailored to prepare children for the entrance exams of local schools, including Parmiters, Dame Alice Owen and the St Albans schools. Year 5 pupils on the course cover verbal reasoning and maths skills. The course works to develop confidence and independent learning skills. Classes are held throughout the week and taught by a manager. For more details on the times of the classes or information on the course, please contact the centre.
Succeed in Secondary
This course is designed to help children prepare for life at secondary school and build confidence during the transition from primary school. Open to pupils in year 6,7,8 and 9 it provides an opportunity for our older members to express opinions, build study skills, research, debate and present their ideas. The course runs every Monday 6.00- 7.00pm. To find out more, please contact a manager at the centre.
Explore Writing
Our popular creative writing course is designed to excite children who may be more reluctant with literacy, challenge those children who already enjoy it and inspire those who struggle to get their ideas down on paper. During the course, children explore different styles of writing as well as developing their confidence and enthusiasm and producing work they are proud of! The course runs on Wednesday nights between 7.00pm and 8.00pm. To book a trial session, please contact a manager at the centre.
Explore and Schools
Last term we visited many schools in the local area as part of our exciting National Young Writers Award Competition, including Cunningham Hill, Maple, Garden Fields, St Adrian’s and Green Lanes to name but a few. The winner will receive a trip to Disneyland Paris for their family, and £500 worth of books for their school.
We also hold interactive workshops with schools in the area, they are a great way of supporting the work children are doing in the classroom, following the National Curriculum and giving children a new opportunity to really have fun with their learning. We also ran a National Book Week workshop in the autumn term which developed children's comprehension and creative skills and gave them the chance to win £100 worth of books.
If you would like some more information about how we could get involved with your school, or to receive a booking form, please call 01727 853992 and one of our managers will be happy to talk to you.
Free Workshops
During every school holiday we run maths and literacy workshops for our members, giving them the chance to take part in a stimulating, interactive session, working with other children and doing something just a little bit different.
We also hold free literacy workshops at in local libraries. Recently we visited Redbourn Library for an exciting Beast Quest adventure. We are visiting Kings Langley, Berkhamsted, Wheathampsted and Tring libraries in the Easter holidays. Our writing workshops are open to members and non-members alike to get their creative juices flowing over the holidays, so keep your eyes peeled for all the fun workshops over the Easter break!
Open Sessions
We are holding a coffee morning on Wednesday 17th March 2010 11.30am-12.30pm, for parents to visit the centre and see some of the work their child has been working on. This is a great time to speak to the managers of the centre about supporting your child’s learning pathway.
The next Open Session for parents is on Monday 13th April 2010 6-7pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to show you the work they do at Explore Learning and for parents to meet the inspiring tutors they work with. Parents get a chance to have a go at similar work to their child's and children get to act as the tutor for the evening. Who knows, you might even earn a lizard card yourself!
We are also holding open sessions for Explore Writing and Succeed in Secondary. Our next Explore Writing Open Session is Wednesday 17th January 7-8pm. Our next Succeed in Secondary Open Session is Monday 15th March 6-7pm.
Please see a manager for details and to reserve your space.
Centre News
Over the winter we have enjoying meeting new families in the Maltings Shopping Centre in St Albans and seeing all our members' photos of them and their lizard cards on holiday.
We are looking forward to meeting more families in the Maltings, and in Hemel Hempstead town centre on 6th March. We are also really excited about working with local Brownie groups and libraries in the Spring.

What our parents think...
"Explore Learning has helped my child to experience learning through a different medium to what is traditionally taught in a classroom environment. The interactive nature of the computer based sessions and the 'lizard card' systems have helped my child to increase his confidence and see real progress in key curriculum areas."
Elizabeth Federer, Explore Parent
"The last parent’s consultation at school before Jack (6) started at Explore was depressing and disappointing, I was told about all the things he wasn’t good at. The recent one was a totally different story. After 3 months at Explore Jack appears to have come leaps and bounds – I actually left there smiling! He is more confident answering questions in a group situation and his reading has improved so much that he has moved up a level"
Kathy Newport, Explore Parent
'The tutors are patient and they care. The parent consultations are very thorough, insightful and I enjoy being part of the planning for future learning strategies.'
Liza Strong, Explore Parent
'I have seen Rhys' confidence levels rise dramatically since starting Explore. He now takes part in more group activities at school and is not afraid of raising hius hand and asking a question.'
Threasa Dee, Explore Parent
