FAQs
What age is Key Stage 1?
Key Stage 1 (KS1) refers to the first phase of primary education for children aged between 5 and 7 years old. During Years 1 and 2, children build strong foundations in core subjects, such as English and maths, to develop essential skills in reading, writing, and numeracy.
Is Reception class Key Stage 1?
Reception class is not part of Key Stage 1. Children are taught the Early Years curriculum, which focuses on play-based exploratory learning. Key Stage 1 introduces more structured lessons in subjects like maths and English.
Is Key Stage 1 too early to think about tuition?
Not at all. Early support in KS1 can help your child build confidence, close learning gaps, and develop habits that make learning feel enjoyable. At Explore Learning, a private KS1 tutor will assess your child’s current level and create a personalised plan to help them build a strong foundation in their learning. Children can also benefit from an online KS1 tutor to grow their confidence in and out of the classroom.
What subjects are taught in Key Stage 1?
KS1 covers core subjects such as English, maths, science, history, geography, art, and PE. At Explore Learning, our tailored maths and English tuition helps children master essential skills like reading, comprehension, spelling, grammar, number sense, and problem-solving. Our programmes are designed to help your child build confidence in these key areas early on.
How much do maths tutors charge per hour in the UK?
The cost of a professional maths tutor in the UK can vary depending on factors like experience, qualifications, and location. Our flexible maths tuition is membership-based, so you get consistent, high-quality support rather than paying per hour. This means your child receives regular, structured sessions tailored to their needs and your family’s schedule, either in-centre or online.
Is getting a Primary Key Stage 1 tutor safe?
Yes! Getting a KS1 tutor with Explore Learning is completely safe. The welfare of your child is always our top priority. All of our tutors hold enhanced DBS checks (or PVG checks in Scotland) and complete annual safeguarding training to ensure they meet the highest standards.
We go beyond basic checks by following strict safeguarding policies, including:
Secure entry systems and attendance registration
Recording who is authorised to collect your child
Bright, open learning spaces where children and tutors are always visible
Paediatric first aid trained staff on site
Our centres are also registered on Ofsted’s Voluntary Childcare Register. This provides an extra layer of reassurance and peace of mind that rigorous safeguarding practices are in place, and your child is learning in a safe, supportive environment. Please view our Policies and Procedures to learn more.
