Personalised maths and English tutoring for children with autism

You don't need a diagnosis to start, just a sense that learning is harder than it should be. Here's what we typically see:

  • Overwhelmed by noise, lights or busy classrooms

  • Thrown by any change to the plan or the routine

  • Refusing work that looks too big to start

  • Masking all day, then exhausted by four o'clock

  • Years ahead in one subject, years behind in another

We work with parents who have the same worries

Whatever's brought you here, we've likely sat with a family facing something similar.

School says he's coping, but I know he's exhausted by the end of the day.

Masking takes energy. We build in the space for your child to stop performing and just learn.

She melts down over homework and I don't know how to help her through it.

We look at what's underneath the resistance, not just the subject, and build a plan that reduces the friction first.

He's bright, but every assessment makes him feel like he's failing.

We start from what he can do, not a benchmark built for someone else, so effort starts to feel worth it again.

Every transition, every change of task, is a battle.

Predictability is built into every session, so your child knows what's coming and can focus on the learning itself.

Autism tutoring built around how your child learns

Adapted maths and English teaching, starting at your child's true level rather than their year group, with the predictability they need to settle and think.

  • A consistent tutor wherever possible, so nothing has to be re-explained

  • Sessions that follow the same shape and rhythm every week

  • Work pitched where they can start, so nothing looks impossible on sight

  • Making the best recommendations around your child’s sensory needs

Honest about our limits

We know that every child with autism is different, and needs can be complex and varied. Knowing our limits is part of caring for your child properly. When any of the following is the case, we'll tell you honestly and point you in the right direction for support.

  • High levels of clinical or therapeutic support. Ongoing input from a specialist professional, rather than tuition

  • Support for high dysregulation. Including behaviour that puts your child or others at risk, requiring continual supervision

  • A dedicated sensory environment. For sensory overload that needs specialist, high-level support beyond what a general setting can offer

  • A diagnosis or formal assessment. We can't provide diagnostic or assessment services; however, we can support your child without a diagnosis

What our tutoring for children with autism looks like

Adapted teaching in maths and English, starting at your child's true level, not their year group.

Structured and predictable learning

Sessions follow a clear, consistent structure, so your child knows what to expect and when. Predictability reduces anxiety around the unknown, freeing up your child's energy for learning rather than managing uncertainty.

Tailored and visual teaching methods

Explanations are clear, visual and step-by-step rather than abstract, using tools like visual schedules and worked examples where they help a concept land. Learning is broken into manageable steps rather than delivered all at once.

Tutor and parent discussing child's progress

Support adapted to your child

Every tutor adjusts their approach to your child specifically: how they communicate, how much processing time they need, what motivates them, and what overwhelms them. This isn't a fixed "autism approach" applied the same way to everyone; it's shaped around your child as an individual.

Two years ago, I had a very anxious nine-year-old, newly diagnosed with ASD and struggling massively at school. He's now working a year ahead in maths, on target in English, and thriving. "Thank you" doesn't seem enough.

They truly get his personality, his humour, and how his autism presents. He had a meltdown there once, and it was handled so calmly that I have no worries at all about him attending.

Any SEN mum knows how hard it is to find somewhere that doesn't run from a child needing more than average. 10/10 recommend.

My child has high-functioning autism and had developed a real fear of maths that was making homework a nightmare. After a year at Explore Learning, his confidence is through the roof, and the tutors really understood him.

Despite his anxiety about new places and formal work, he's made 18 months' progress in nine months in some areas. Staff engage with his special interests, reduce pressure and make adjustments like wobble cushions so he can feel safe and engage.
