Recruiting Assistant Directors: What do we look for?

At Explore Learning we absolutely have to see passion. You throw your heart and soul into your role every day. That passion is what makes a difference to our members. Drive and motivation is needed in every part of the job: marketing, running centres, recruiting staff and so much more. It’s something we look for in every single candidate. If you are passionate about something you are more willing to try things that are outside of your comfort zone.
We talk for a living and to a wide range of people – one minute you are chatting to a 5-year-old about their favourite book and the next you could be discussing a child’s education needs with parents and even teachers. Excellent communication skills are really important both verbally and non-verbally.
We look for candidates with bags of initiative. The Assistant Director role is so diverse; you will be doing new things all the time, so it’s an exciting learning curve. There’s a lot of thinking on your feet and being fearless; being happy to approach things you have never done before. If you have the confidence to do that you will be successful.
A candidate should be well prepared. Have you looked at the website and done your homework? We love it when candidates draw on transferable skills but relate them to our business and why they want to work for us. This helps demonstrate a good awareness of their suitability.
The best candidates are those that listen and are able to adapt and be dynamic. In this climate it is so important to be flexible and potentially take on a wider scope of responsibility.
Our mission is to create fearless learners, so most importantly we need role models to rub off on our members. We pride ourselves on the passion and excitement that the members have – they want to be like their tutors!
