A wonderful working week!
April 22, 2014
During the last week of March, our Creative Writing groups across the centres in the UK performed the plays they had been working on as part of their Play Scripts course.
Working in the Curriculum team, I had the joy of writing six creative writing courses for our classes to span 18 months of story writing development. The courses include
- journalistic writing
- balanced and persuasive writing
When you spend hours on end, locked in a room writing resources for 90+ centres, you can often wonder if the passion and enthusiasm you have for writing something will translate through to the staff and children who will ultimately produce the stories. When I worked in the Explore Learning centre in Edinburgh, the Creative Writing class was the highlight of my week. Could I transmit that love of group writing with children through a course workbook?
So imagine my delight when, for one week in March, I received email upon email from the Explore Learning centres showing photos and videos of how the plays were performed and the wonderfully imaginative ideas the staff and children had for setting, scenery, props and lighting. Not only had they worked together over the previous 3 months to produce and perform a play script for their families but they had truly understood the key elements of theatre and performance: the staging. Nothing could communicate more to me that my love of writing and drama had spread through the course we had created than those performances.
Fair to say, it was a wonderful working week and I’m excited to think about the next lot of lesson plans… Aiming for bigger and better!
