Bromley member’s thoughts on family will melt your heart
August 02, 2018
What does family mean to you? Alfie from our Bromley centre has been doing some work over the summer about his family and it’s too wonderful not to share!
To help children Seize the Summer, we’ve been releasing a new activity each week of the holidays to keep their minds busy! Alfie is a member at our Bromley centre and completed the project ‘It’s all about family’, and we couldn’t stop smiling (and maybe even shed a little tear) reading about what family means to him.
He starts off by explaining the dictionary definition of the word, which states ‘a group of people related by blood or marriage’. But Alfie goes on to demonstrate that it actually means so much more than this!
He says that although he doesn’t know his dad, who is related to him by blood, “…my mum, my nan, my grandad, uncle and cousin are always there and they are my real family”. He goes on to show that family also extends wider than just your immediate relatives: “Along with this I have neighbours such as Katy and Debbie who I have known all my life and I would consider family. They would do anything for me if I needed them and they are always welcome in my home.” You’re so right Alfie!
“My family are mine and I wouldn’t swap them despite the fact they make me brush my teeth”
Friends can also be thought of as family, as Alfie proves: “We actually have a friend staying with us at the moment who recently lost her mum and part of her own blood family but does not feel as lost as she could as she has the support of us and feels part of our family.” Such touching words – anyone would be lucky to have Alfie’s extended family life!
But don’t forget – it’s not just people who make up a family: “My family even includes my dogs!” We couldn’t agree more!
When asked to describe his family in one word, Alfie simply says ‘CRAZY’! Here’s why: “Our family is full of laughter and fun” which sounds heavenly to us. So what’s his final thought? “My family are mine and I wouldn’t swap them despite the fact they make me brush my teeth”.
We were so impressed with the way Alfie put so much thought and planning into his writing, and his personality really shone through! Here is his work in full so you can enjoy it as much as we did 🙂
Our free Seize the Summer activities are released each week and are designed to exercise children’s brains over the holidays; after all, the brain is a muscle – the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets!
