Is maths important?

October 13, 2016

At Explore Learning, we often find that children see maths as all about getting to the answer as quickly as possible and if it’s not immediately apparent, switching off.

But how do parents feel about maths? Recent research revealed in the Daily Mail suggests that parents’ number skills and attitudes to maths can ‘rub off’ on their children. We wanted to find out whether parents thought maths was important for their child, whether they are a maths whizz themselves or a little under-confident. The below infographic shows some of the key findings from our survey.

Is maths important?

A third of the parents we spoke to said that maths is very important for their child’s future, however a whopping nine out of 10 parents would like their child to be more confident with their maths skills. We believe that there’s no such thing as a ‘maths brain’. Although everyone has different capabilities, every child can go beyond what they thought was possible! Find out how we work with our members to build confidence in their ability and awaken a passion for learning.

We were pleased to discover that only 18% of parents felt they found maths more intimidating as an adult. Almost a quarter went as far as to declare their love for the subject (24%)!

We know that maths can be a challenging subject, and parents can often feel worried about helping their child with homework. That’s why we offer a range of parent workshops for anyone wanting to build an awareness of the school curriculum or would just like to feel more confident with current teaching methods. You can find out more about how we can support the whole family here.

Is your child already a budding mathematician? We’ll stretch and challenge them to further inspire their curiosity. Or if they just need a little extra boost, we can help them to get to the next level. We’d love to meet you and your family – why not book a free trial at a centre near you?
