How to get the most out of online tutoring?

July 02, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen many students turning to the online tutoring industry to fulfil their academic needs. The emergence of interactive technology has widened the possibilities of teaching and learning successfully at home with online tuition available through almost any digital device.

With an increased demand for tuition delivered digitally we thought we’d share some of our top tips on how to get the most of online tutoring.

Best way to do online tutoring

Make the most of your child’s online lessons with these tips…

Set clear goals for successful online learning

The best approach to online tuition is to identify clear goals for your child; the tutors can then focus on meeting those targets. To be successful we recommend creating goals that are achievable, measurable, specific and believable;

  • Achievable: Goals need to be set at a level that is more advanced than the level your child is currently working at, but not so advanced that it is unachievable or beyond reach. It’s better to work in baby steps so that you can see the progress your child is making.
  • Measurable: Goals need to be measurable so that both parents and students can track progress and success. A good way of doing this is to check in regularly with your child’s tutor to ask how they’re getting on. You can track the skills that they are mastering and the learning goals they are achieving, allowing for regular celebrations throughout their learning journey.
  • Specific: Aim for relevant and tangible goals. For example ‘I am going to learn my 8 times tables’.
  • Believable: Your child must believe in the goal and believe in their ability to achieve it.

Get prepared beforehand

Make sure you and your child are prepared for the first online tutoring session. Making a list of their strengths and weaknesses and noting down any particular questions or topics your child needs assistance with will help the tutor understand what areas they need to focus on.

You may also need to create a profile on the tutoring website and make sure you have video calling enabled on your device ready to tune into the virtual classroom.

Ensure your child feels comfortable about what’s going to happen and explain the differences between face to face and online tuition.

To prepare, make sure they have everything they need to hand;

  • Lesson materials
  • Writing equipment
  • Any other stationery they might need
  • A drink of water

Find a productive working space

Make sure the online tutoring sessions take place in a quiet space with minimal distractions. Invest in a headset to block out any background noise and focus your child’s attention.

Give your child and their tutor space

We recommend that parents are on hand at the beginning and end of each session to touch base with the tutor and hear feedback from your child. It’s best to avoid sitting in on sessions though, as this can both distract and put additional pressure on your child.

Make the most of online learning resources

Good online tuition should extend beyond just a lesson with a tutor. A membership with Explore Learning includes unlimited access to your child’s curriculum allowing for additional practice and a regular review of their skills between lessons. They also have access to a brilliant assortment of free learning resources in ‘The Club’. There is a rich selection of activities to keep growing minds stretched, challenged and entertained.

“This online learning platform has great variety that supports the education curriculum and has given us flexible, alternative learning. I simply cannot recommend them enough. If you are not sure whether to take the plunge, I can only say do it now…you won’t regret it!!

Their support, teaching prowess, professionalism and care is unrivalled.”

Benefits of online tutoring

The world of online tuition has many benefits;

Education when you need it, wherever you need it

Teaching remotely allows you to transport brilliant online tutors into your home without the barriers of distance and time. Learning can take place at home or away and fit comfortably around the family schedule. A relief to busy parents everywhere!

Interactive technology

Your child is supported with their curriculum via live video stream and with only a laptop or tablet, they are transported into a world of real time learning. A place where they can build confidence at their own pace, master new skills and develop great learning habits. Explore Learning’s innovative learning tool, Compass, enhances children’s learning experience and provides advanced feedback for parents and children.

Adaptive and engaging

Having an adaptive curriculum that provides children with the right questions when they need to know them is a powerful way of making maths and English tuition sessions engaging. Coupled with an energetic and knowledgeable tutor keeps your child’s focus on the subjects that are being taught in a way that they enjoy and meets their individual needs.

A safe online space

A safe and secure online tutoring platform is of utmost importance. At Explore Learning, our tuition is provided through our own secure platform providing a child-friendly environment. All our tutors are DBS checked and receive regular development and support from managers, including annual safeguarding training.
