What are the GCSEs?
GCSEs (General Certificates of Secondary Education) are the main qualifications taken by 14- to 16-year-olds in schools and colleges in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Chosen subjects are studied over two years with final exams taking place in Year 11. After completing their qualifications, school students are then able to decide whether they want to leave school education or continue studying towards A-level qualifications.
For many 16-year-olds in the UK, GCSEs are an occasion when they transition from childhood to young adulthood. They are a common entryway into the job market for numerous others, making use of the application as a springboard into a completely new field of knowledge.
